Couple’s shooting deaths in Utah investigated as homicides

A homicide investigation is underway into the shooting deaths of a couple in Utah, and one of the women has Colorado ties.

The bodies of Crystal Michelle Turner, 38, and Kylen Carrol Schulte, 24, were found Aug. 18 in the South Mesa area of the La Sal Loop Road in Grand County, Utah, according to the county sheriff’s office.

“The preliminary investigation conducted by the medical examiner’s office determined the cause of death to be from gunshot wounds,” the GCSO said in a news release. The sheriff’s office expressed “deepest sympathies and remorse to the victims’ families and friends.”

Schulte was born in Vail. Her aunt, Bridget Calvert, has organized a GoFundMe page to raise funds for funeral and memorial expenses for the families’ of the victims, as well as travel expenses, lodging costs, food and lost wages.

“Kylen and Crystal lived in Moab, UT. They found their way from the best campsite to the next but always showed up for work with the best ethic and greatest intent,” Calvert said in the GoFundMe post.

The fund, has raised $32,758 as of Tuesday afternoon, surpassing a goal of $15,000. More than 500 donors have contributed.

On Tuesday, the Daily Beast quoted a person who said the couple complained of a “weirdo” camping near them the night before they disappeared.

“We were just having a great time, having a couple drinks, and all they said was there was a creep [staying] next to them,” said Kayla Borza, one of the last people to see the couple alive. “And that was it.”

The sheriff’s office said it is “following up with any and all leads that come to our attention.”

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 435-259-8115.
