Denver weather: Hot, possible brief afternoon rain, air quality alert

Metro Denver residents face hot, dry weather Thursday under sunny blue skies — the fifth day in a row with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees — with possible afternoon rain showers, according to the National Weather Service.

The high temperature in Denver will be 94 degrees Thursday, decreasing to 64 degrees at night, weather service forecasters said. On Friday, the high temperature is expected to be 87 degrees as a cooling trend kicks in, containing the heat through Saturday.

During Thursday afternoon, rain storms may bring rain and wind gusting at speeds up to 22 miles per hour, forecasters said. Any rain likely will be brief along Colorado’s Front Range Interstate 25 urban corridor — but potentially severe storms are expected on the eastern high plains after 2 p.m., bringing large hail and damaging bursts of wind, forecasters said. Meteorologists estimated the likelihood of rain Thursday at 20%.

Heat in recent days has favored air pollution, and state health officials issued an air quality alert, warning of potentially harmful conditions and asking residents to take action, effective through Thursday afternoon.

This alert issued by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Regional Air Quality Council covers the Denver-Boulder area, Fort Collins and Greeley, as well as other cities along the Front Range from Douglas County northward to Larimer and Weld counties.

Health officials urged residents to limit driving in non-electric, combustion engine vehicles and other activities that burn gas and diesel. Collective action could help reduce pollution. Hot and sunny skies, with only light wind, likely will lead to concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution that could be unhealthy for sensitive groups including the elderly, children, and people with breathing problems, CDPHE officials said. The highest concentrations of ozone were expected in the southern and western parts of metro Denver and around Fort Collins.
