Denver winter storm moves out overnight said National Weather Service

A winter storm that brought snow, cloudy skies and freezing temperatures to the metro area on Wednesday is expected to clear out overnight, with sunny skies in the Denver weather forecast on Thursday.

The widespread storm system brought winter weather to the Front Range, the mountains and the Eastern Plains.

Boulder received 8.3 inches of snow as of about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday, while Denver International Airport received 2.8  inches late in the day, according to the National Weather Service. Genesee at 10.3 inches on Wednesday morning.

Denver’s high temperature was recorded early, 22 degrees at 12:02 a.m. Wednesday, and the low temperature in the city during the day was 11 degrees at 9:17 a.m., the weather service said. At about 6 p.m. Wednesday, Denver’s temperature was down to 9 degrees, and dropping, with light snow falling and a foggy mist.

Steady snow, gray skies and freezing weather contributed to cancellations and delays at DIA. At about 6:30 p.m., there had been 868 delays, incoming and departing flights, at the airport, according to FlightAware.com. Total flight cancellations were 191 late in the day.

Into Wednesday night, there was a 50% chance for continued snowfall, mainly before 1 a.m. Thursday, according to the weather service forecast. A winter weather advisory posted for the metro area was set to expire at midnight and the overnight low temperature in Denver will be around 5 degrees, with a wind chill value of -4 degrees.

At the Steamboat Mountain Resort on Wednesday skiing and riding was canceled because of adverse weather conditions. A resort official blamed the closure on high winds and extreme wind chill. At mid-afternoon the temperature at mid-mountain was 9 degrees with winds from the south at 4 miles mph, according to the resort’s website.

Snow-packed roads, with ice and slushy conditions slowed commuters in the metro area and along the Front Range in the morning and the evening. There were a few temporary road closures in the metro area because of accidents, but most roadways remained opened throughout most of the day.

As the storm system moves out overnight, a quiet weather pattern is expected to settle in to the metro area  through the weekend, according to the weather service.

On Thursday in Denver skies are expected to be sunny with a high temperature near 35 degrees, the weather service said. Friday should also be sunny in the city with a high temperature near 53 degrees.

There’s a slight chance for snow in Denver on Monday, before 11 a.m., which will give way to a chance of rain as the high tops out around 56 degrees.
