Di’s failed marriage may have led to Wills’ warning to Harry, royal fans suggest

Prince William’s alleged conversation with Prince Harry about Meghan Markle that experts have suggested sparked their feud could have been influenced by his parents' failed marriage, royal watchers speculate.

It is thought that William urged Harry to take his time during his courtship with Meghan after they got engaged the year after they met on a blind date.

But royal experts believe the conversation left Harry convinced that his brother didn’t support him – and it was the start of a breakdown in their relationship that has yet to be fixed.

Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie, who host the Royally Obsessed podcast, spoke about the 40th anniversary of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage today (July 29).

And they suggested William’s memories of its failure might have led to his decision to offer the advice.

Roberta said: “Looking back, Diana was so young [when they got married]. We know she had just turned 20. Charles was 32. They met when she was 16 and he was 29. They were a young couple – even he says they didn’t know each other that well.

“We know that [William] was kind of quick to warn Harry, ‘Listen, slow down, you don’t have to rush into this’.”

Rachel added: “You see what happened with Charles and Diana, having only 13 dates before getting married, and a lot of them had supervision, and family members around. It wasn’t on their own.

“Diana and Charles’ wedding was a little bit pre-arranged in the sense that there was a lot of pressure for them to get married. With Meghan and Harry that was completely the opposite. They found each other and fell in love.

“But I think a longer courtship is pretty critical marrying into the Royal Family because you need to know what you’re signing up for. Look at how many people Charles dated for a brief period of time, and they were all like, ‘No freaking way. I’m not signing up for this’.”

Rachel pointed to a revealing comment from Meghan during the Sussexes’ Oprah Winfrey interview earlier this year.

She said: “Meghan’s revelation in the Oprah interview about, ‘Wait, you guys do all these formalities at home when you’re not in public?’ That was news to her – clearly there was a lot to figure out.”

Unlike Harry and Meghan, William and Kate went to university together and dated for years before they got married.

“It was such a different romance and such a different trajectory,” said Roberta.

“It could have been that [William] was looking at his parents and thinking, ‘Look, they dated for less than a year, they got married, things did not work out – spectacularly did not work out’.

“So it’s an interesting thought.”
