Dozens of mourners give emotional send-off to dad killed when heavy machinery fell on him

DOZENS of mourners turned out to say a tearful farewell to a dad killed after heavy machinery fell on top of him.

Danny White, 32, was working as a tree surgeon when he was crushed by the machinery last month.



The young dad was today remembered by mourners who gathered in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.

Police have said thy are investigating if the service breached Covid lockdown rules, but no fines have yet been handed out.

Crowds followed a black horse-drawn carriage carrying the coffin of the 32-year-old who died after the horrific workplace tragedy.

While some of the mourners wore masks, others appeared not to be wearing the face coverings designed to stop the spread of Covid.

Trucks, tractors and carriages drove through Cheshunt with posters reading "RIP Dan Boy" after the funeral service at the St Mary the Virgin Church.


Flowers in the shape of a chip van and a motorbike " were displayed in the local graveyard.

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson said of today's funeral: “We were made aware of a funeral in Cheshunt and liaised with the funeral directors and local authority beforehand.

“The funeral directors worked to keep the number of mourners inside the church to within the 30-person limit and the cemetery was later closed to keep numbers limited for the burial.

“A number of additional mourners were in the area, but were not admitted and officers took steps to move vehicles on and remind people of social distancing guidelines and of wearing masks.

“No fines were issued, but enquiries are in hand to potentially prosecute individuals for breaching COVID-19 regulation."

What are the rules for funerals held during lockdown?

England's third Covid lockdown means that funerals are currently limited to just 30 mourners.

A maximum of 30 can attend a service – but only six people are permitted to attend a wake.

Crematoriums remain open for funeral services only and burial services can continue in the cemetery grounds.

Wakes in Wales are capped at 15 people, and up to 20 can attend funerals in Scotland. 

Since the national lockdown was introduced on January 6, only 30 people are allowed to attend a funeral.

Mourners are permitted to attend as long as they follow the relevant rules and social distancing guidelines.

Crematoriums remain open for funeral services only and burial services can continue in the cemetery grounds.

According to HertsLive Danny, also known as Danboy, lost his life on January 12.

Rebecca Harvey, the partner and mother to their two boys, said that Danny, who worked as a tree surgeon, was working on private land in Wormley when the piece of machinery landed fell on him.

A JustGiving page was set up for the family just days after the tragic accident and has since raised a staggering £34,420.

Last week police watched on as dozens of travellers attended a funeral in Co. Durham.

Mourners were seen walking alongside a horse and carriage and several vehicles carrying tributes to the traveller.

Police closed roads and assisted with the procession.
