THE suspect accused of supplying the gun used to kill police officer Ella French has been released from jail on $4,500 bond.
Chicago superintendent David Brown said he was "extremely disappointed" after Jamel Danzy was allowed to "walk free" on Wednesday.
Danzy, 29, is charged with supplying the semiautomatic handgun used to shoot dead French and critically injure her male partner in Chicago over the weekend.
Brown said of the court decision: "To say that I am extremely disappointed in U.S Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert’s decision to release Jamel Danzy on an unsecured bond today is an understatement.
"It is an outrage."
'DANGEROUS PRECEDENT'
He added: "This decision sets a dangerous precedent that straw purchasers like Danzy are not a danger to society, despite the fact that his alleged actions directly led to the murder of a Chicago Police Officer and left another in critical condition.
"The outrageous abundance of illegal firearms in our city and our nation is a major factor driving the violence that is continually cutting short the lives of our loved ones and fellow human beings.
"The role of the justice system, particularly that of federal prosecutors and judges is more important than ever, and by allowing Mr. Danzy to walk free the court has done a disservice to Officer French’s memory, to the entire Chicago Police Department, and to the thousands of men and women across the country who work around the clock, day in and day out to stem the violence that is plaguing our communities."
The Honda CR-V stopped by French and her colleague during the routine traffic stop because of expired plates is also said to have been registered to Danzy.
He was arrested Sunday and charged with conspiracy to violate federal firearm laws.
'I FEEL TRULY BAD'
Shortly after his release Danzy told CBS he was "devastated" by French's death.
He said: "I’m a good person, educated, went to school got two degrees – a bachelor’s and master’s – love kids, work with kids, love my nephew. I work hard every single day. I stay out of trouble.
"I don’t even want to discuss it. I just feel truly bad about the situation and that’s it.”
Monty Morgan – previously identified as Emonte Morgan – is jailed without bond first-degree murder of a peace officer, attempted murder of two other officers, unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon charges.
His brother, Eric Morgan, also was ordered held without bond.
He is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and obstruction of justice.
MOTHER, BROTHERS ARREST
The brother's mother was arrested on Tuesday after she barged into a hospital where one of her sons was being treated and wrestled with cops.
Evalena Flores, 41, was detained at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Chicago at around 8.30pm yesterday after causing a disturbance when she was told she couldn't see Monty.
Emonte was being treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen that he is said to have sustained in a subsequent shootout with police when his mother barged through the doors of the hospital on Tuesday night.
Police said Emonte and Eric were pulled over by French and two other officers while on patrol at around 9pm Saturday.
A court heard the fatal shooting happened when Emonte refused to put down a drink.
French is the first Chicago police officer to die from a gunshot in the line of duty since 2018.
