Explosions are currently taking place in Ukraine's capital city of Kyiv, as well as in other locations across the country, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 'special military operation'.
Putin also warned other countries that any attempt to interfere with the Russian action would lead to “consequences they have never seen.”
After a series of explosions near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have started to come in as a NATO official told Reuters that it looked like the Russian invasion of Ukraine had begun.
The BBC's Paul Adamss in Kyiv has reported hearing five to six "distant explosions" in Kyiv.
Local media have issued that gunfire and explosions have been heard near the main airport of Boryspil in Kyiv.
There have been reports on social media of explosions in Kharkhiv in the north-east, Odesa in the South and the eastern Donestk Oblast area.
The explosions in Kharkhiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine, were heard minutes after President Putin announced a military operation in Eastern Ukraine.
CNN reporters on the ground in Kharkiv have raised hearing a "steady stream of loud explosions."
Reuters has quoted a witness as having heard an explosion in the Belgorod province in south-west Russia, which is not far from the Ukraine border.
