Father-of-three drowned in hot tub while on weekend break to Welsh seaside with his family, inquest hears

A father-of-three drowned in a hot tub while on a weekend break with his family in Wales, an inquest has heard.

Ian Foden, 56, of Liverpool, was found face down in the waters of the tub at a seaside resort in Prestatyn on September 24 last year.

At a hearing at Ruthin, Katie Sutherland, assistant coroner for North Wales East and Central, described it as ‘a terrible, terrible tragedy’.

The inquest heard Mr Foden had enjoyed a day at the beach and a trip to the pub at the Frith Hotel before getting into the hot tub with his wife Donna.

But when she got out and asked her husband to join her he said: ‘I can’t’, and stayed in the water.

The hearing was told that around 30 minutes later family members went to check on the engineer, only to find him ‘face down’ in the water.

Coroner Ms Sutherland heard a neighbour helped to pull Mr Foden from the tub, but sadly he could not be saved by CPR.

The hearing was told Mr Foden was pronounced dead by medics at around 6.45pm.

A post-mortem examination revealed that he had 237 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, the drink-drive limit being 80.

There was also a small amount of anti-depressants, but pathologist Dr Mohammad Mehdi said that had played no part.

He gave the cause of death as drowning, and the coroner recorded a conclusion of accidental death.

Froth had been discovered in Mr Foden’s lungs, which is a typical indicator that someone who has drowned had inhaled some water, the inquest heard.

Ms Sutherland agreed with the medical cause of death being drowning due to alcohol intoxication.

Mr Foden’s wife Donna told the hearing her husband’s death ‘has left a huge hole in the lives of everyone who loved him’.
