The FBI has narrowed down a suspect in the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, according to multiple media reports.

Identifying the man who is believed to have used bear spray against multiple people during the Jan. 6 raid on the US Capitol is a priority for the agency, CBS News reported, citing unidentified sources.

It’s not clear exactly how the New Jersey-born Sicknick, 42, died. The day after the attack, Capitol Police said Sicknick was injured “while physically engaging with protesters.” Multiple reports said he was hit with a fire extinguisher. But it now appears that his death might have been triggered by a response to the bear spray, a chemical agent that irritates the eyes, nose and lungs and can cause them to swell up.

The New York Times first reported that a suspect was pinpointed in the case.

The Capitol Police, however, issued a statement Friday night in response to the reports that said the medical examiner’s report is not yet complete.

“We are awaiting toxicology results and continue to work with other government agencies regarding the death investigation,” the statement said.

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for clarification Saturday.

Sicknick laid in honor at the US Capitol and was slated be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

More than 300 people who took part in the Capitol riot have been charged for various crimes.
