Fell into a ‘void’: Club director reveals Liam Hampson’s final moments

A wrong turn on the way to the bathroom led Australian footballer Liam Hampson to his death inside a Barcelona nightclub, the club’s director has revealed.

Hampson, a Queensland rugby league player with Redcliffe Dolphins, went missing on Tuesday during a night out at the Sala Apolo nightclub with friends including Gold Coast Titans star A.J. Brimson and Brisbane Broncos players Jordan Riki and Jesse Arthars.

They immediately launched a frantic search, but Hampson’s body wasn’t found until the next morning, when nightclub workers found him and alerted police.

Hampson’s devastated father Brett broke the news via Facebook, saying his son, who had a “heart of gold” had “sadly not survived” an accident.

A spokeswoman for the Catalan Police, Mossos d’Esquadra, confirmed the accidental death occurred after Hampson fell “from a height of 10 metres”.

How the 24-year-old came to fall, and how his death initially went unnoticed, has now been addressed by the director of Sala Apolo, Albert Guiharro, who detailed Hampson’s final moments to Catalan radio station RAC1.

As reported by Nine’s Wide World of Sports, Guiharro said Hampson’s movements were captured on CCTV and showed that he went through two emergency exits in search of a bathroom and ended up on a terrace, with no way back inside the club.

After relieving himself, Guiharro said, Hampson “realises that all the doors he came out of can’t be opened from the outside. Without thinking about it, he jumps a 15-metre wall,” he said.

Tragically, the space Hampson fell into was a “void”, Guiharro said, and it wasn’t until late the following morning when workers heard a phone ringing from the void area that they found him.

On Friday, Brett Hampson thanked the friends and strangers who had reached out with well wishes and tributes for his son.

“We are so happy that Liam’s last days were the best days of his life and we thank his close group of mates that were with him in those times,” he wrote on Facebook.
