Boris Johnson has plunged England into a third national lockdown as coronavirus cases are spiralling out of control.

People can only leave their home for a limited number of reasons, non-essential businesses must close, and schools are only open to vulnerable children and children of key workers.

The new lockdown rules will be in place until at least 19 February, when the country will most likely return to the tier system.

Areas will be placed into Tiers 1, 2, 3 or 4 depending on their rate of Covid-19 post-lockdown.

In the meantime, the whole country is under strict restrictions, with pubs, hairdressers, leisure centres and gyms forced to close their doors once again.

Here's what can stay open during England's third national lockdown:

Businesses that can stay open

Essential businesses can stay open during this national lockdown. This counts as:

  • Essential retail such as food shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences
  • Businesses providing repair services may also stay open, where they primarily offer repair services
  • Petrol stations, automatic (but not manual) car washes, vehicle repair and MOT services, bicycle shops, and taxi and vehicle hire businesses
  • Banks, building societies, post offices, short-term loan providers and money transfer businesses
  • Funeral directors
  • Launderettes and dry cleaners
  • Medical and dental services
  • Vets and retailers of products and food for the upkeep and welfare of animals
  • Animal rescue centres, boarding facilities and animal groomers (may continue to be used for animal welfare, rather than aesthetic purposes)
  • Agricultural supplies shops
  • Mobility and disability support shops
  • Storage and distribution facilities
  • Car parks, public toilets and motorway service areas
  • Outdoor playgrounds
  • Outdoor parts of botanical gardens and heritage sites for exercise
  • Places of worship
  • Crematoriums and burial grounds

More than 550,000 businesses in England will close as a result of this lockdown.

Pubs and restaurants are allowed to offer deliveries and takeaways – but only food. Takeaway alcohol is banned in this new lockdown.

The new lockdown announcement came as the UK's Covid-19 alert level was raised to 5 (the highest setting) for the first time since the pandemic began.

This signifies that there is a material risk of the NHS being overwhelmed.
