Germans mock BRITS for bagging sun loungers! Old rivals turn the tables after decades of being the butt of OUR jokes for putting their towels down – as they condemn our ’embarrassing’ behaviour
- Germans and Britons have long locked horns over who’s responsible for chaos
Germans have mocked Brits for bagging sun loungers this summer after decades of being the butt of our jokes for racing to put their towels down to secure the prime poolside spot.
Sunbed wars on the Costa del Sol, Benidorm and other tourist hotspots continue unabated this summer, forcing some hotels to introduce parking ticket-style systems and security guards to control the frenzy.
Brits and Germans have long locked horns over who is to blame for the annual havoc as tourists descend on popular coastal resorts for the summer holidays to bask in some much-needed sunshine.
But the Germans have turned the tables as one publication blasted Brits’ behaviour as ’embarrassing’, while another condemned UK tourists for getting around hotels banning towels being placed on sunbeds by lining them up outside the pool doors instead.
German website Focus Online said it was mainly ‘elderly or middle-aged British tourists’ responsible.
‘Vacationers like to reserve loungers by the pool or on the beach with their towels. Some hotels then closed the doors to the outside overnight,’ the article said.

‘That doesn’t seem to stop British holidaymakers, however, as they have now found another alternative to get their favourite daybed.’
Bild – Germany’s most read newspaper – has also published an article with the headline ‘Battle for the couches escalates’ in reference to a video of British tourists swarming onto sunbeds.

The outlet blasted Brits for an ’embarrassing deckchair and towel race’ in Tenerife – where locals have been caught setting up their deck chairs in the middle of the night to beat the swarm of tourists.
As the sunbed wars between Germany and Britain shows no sign of stopping, another German newspaper, Merkur, said the fight for loungers this year was spiralling into a battle with ‘grotesque features’.
It’s not the first time Germans have stirred up the sunbed rivalry.
In 2018, Bild led a counter-attack over Thomas Cook’s sunloungers, declaring ‘zis means war’ as it emerged Germans can also use the same booking system as Brits to bag the best spots.
At the time, Thomas Cook announced it was launching a new service for UK customers that would allow them to choose and pre-book their sunbeds up to six days in advance.
However, when it emerged German holidaymakers could also get in on the act, Tanit Koch, editor of Bild, took to Twitter and cheekily wrote: ‘Zis means war’, accompanied by a gun and sunshade emoji.
The newspaper also ran a story on the sunbed booking service with the headline ‘England plans a new offensive – new miracle weapon in the towel war’.

Nearly 38.5million tourists visited Spain in the first six months of this year – and these were predominantly, British, German and French travellers.
Sunbed war season is well and truly underway and it has now taken an even uglier turn as two Britons were accused of tipping a Spanish holidaymaker out of her sun lounger when she took their spot by a hotel pool.
The British men, in their 60s and 30s, allegedly pushed the mother of two and shoved her daughters in a row over sunbeds.
The Spanish family, who were staying in Fuerteventura, say they were ‘afraid’ and plan to press charges against the Britons.
In Benidorm, a British mother was left close to tears after tourists ‘swarmed like ants’ to claim sunbeds and forced her family to sit under a water slide on the first day of their holiday.
Cayleigh Tuffs, who is on holiday with her husband Andrew and their eight-year-old daughter Charley, described the rush for beds as ‘horrendous’ and vowed never to return to the Spanish tourist destination.

As sunbed war season grips the continent, locals have had to take matters into their own hands.
In Benidorm, residents were seen erecting parasols in the dark in front of the ocean, while Greek coastal crusaders have declared a sunbed war on British tourist hotspots, pledging to fight back against the ‘abusive occupation’ of beaches.
The so-called ‘Towel Movement’ was set up in Paros by jaded residents, tired of not being able to find a free space on beaches due to aggressive sunbed firms.
They argue that illegal operators have been rinsing holidaymakers, who are paying over the odds to secure a spot – and leaving nowhere for locals to go.
