  • She was on the playground of Archbishop Sentamu Academy when it occurred
  • A boy allegedly picked her up and dropped on on her head, according to family
  • She has a ‘big’ blood clot and a bleed on the brain following the incident

A young schoolgirl has suffered a serious brain injury after she was allegedly ‘dropped on her head’ onto a concrete playground at a Hull school.

Neeka Atkinson, 13, was allegedly approached by a boy she didn’t know, who dropped her and then ‘walked away laughing’ at Archbishop Sentamu Academy on July 8.

The boy picked her up by the neck, before dropping her head first onto the floor, according to her devastated family.

Crying and in pain, Neeka went to student services. Shortly afterwards she started fitting and was rushed to hospital.

Medics found that the schoolgirl had a ‘big’ blood clot and a bleed on the brain following the playground incident.

Neeka’s sister, Alisha Atkinson, said: ‘From what we know, he picked her up by her neck at first and then slammed her head first into the concrete, then walked away laughing and said ‘it’s funny she deserves it’.

Neeka Atkinson, 13, was allegedly picked up by a boy that she didn’t know, before being dropped on the floor of the playground at school. She is currently in hospital after medics found that she had a ‘big’ blood clot and a bleed on the brain

The schoolgirl was crying in pain after the incident. She was rushed to hospital, and she can now only use one side of her face and she is struggling to speak

Alisha said: ‘She began fitting and her eyes were rolling and she was being sick.

‘Neeka was rushed to hospital, they induced her into a coma and did a CT scan immediately. They found that she had a big blood clot on her brain and also a bleed on the brain – within minutes she was rushed to surgery which took four hours.

‘They don’t have the facilities to keep her in Hull Royal, so she is waiting for a transfer to either Leeds or Sheffield. They said any further hospitals they try to send her to will be too far and she won’t make it.’

At the moment, Neeka is awake in hospital but can only use the right side of her face and is struggling to speak. She heartbreakingly asked her nan if she was ‘dead’ because she couldn’t use her body anymore.

The school has issued a statement following the incident. Helen Winn, who started as Executive Principal on Monday, said: ‘We are all desperately worried about our 13-year-old student following an incident last week. All our thoughts are with her, her family and her friends at this very difficult time.

The ordeal happened at Archbishop Sentamu Academy in Hull

‘We are enormously grateful for the outstanding work of our healthcare professionals who we know are doing all they can for her. Because of the police involvement in the case, we are unable to say anything further at this stage.’

Humberside Police confirmed they are investigating the incident. A force spokeswoman said: ‘Enquiries are underway after a 13-year-old girl suffered a serious injury in an incident at a Hull school on Friday, July 8. We were called shortly after 4pm with reports that the girl had been taken to hospital for treatment following an incident earlier that day.

‘Investigations are underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. As part of the investigation a teenage boy was interviewed to establish the circumstances. The girl remains in hospital in a stable condition.’

Neeka’s family have set up a GoFundMe to pay for accommodation and travel to Sheffield for Neeka’s nan, once she is flown to Sheffield. Any extra money will go towards Neeka’s rehabilitation and any equipment she may need.
