An eight-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a caravan at a Wilsons Promontory campground.

The caravan was being moved when it struck the girl about 10am on Sunday at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Fifth Avenue in Tidal River.

A police spokeswoman said an off-duty paramedic performed CPR on the girl but she could not be revived.

The driver involved stopped and is assisting police with the investigation.

Tidal River, about 220 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, is the main visitor hub for people visiting Wilsons Promontory National Park in west Gippsland.
