A five-year-old girl has died after she was attacked by rampaging monkeys while playing with her friends in India.

The young girl, named Narmada, had been playing on the banks of the Nakatiya river in Bareilly, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, with friends when the swarm of monkeys attacked her.

As the group of children cried for help, local villagers rushed to the scene and  rescued the injured girl from the monkeys, The Times of India reports.

The bleeding child, whose skin was ripped off by the monkeys and who had been ‘bitten almost everywhere’, was rushed to hospital where she died from her injuries.

Narmada’s father Nand Kishore described how his daughter, who was the youngest of his three children, was ‘crying for help’ when he arrived at the scene.

He told The Times of India: ‘The monkeys were quite aggressive and had bitten by daughter everywhere. When I reached the spot, my daughter was crying for help.’

Today, Ashok Kumar, station house officer of Bithri Chenpur police station, said: ‘The family has been assured compensation under relevant act.

‘The locals had demanded that the monkeys be trapped. We advised them to take help from the forest department and gram panchayat office. No FIR is possible in this case.’

The savage attack is the latest in a long line of monkey-related tragedies in India, which is thought to be home to around 50million of the primates.

In December last year panic-stricken residents watched in horror as monkeys killed 250 dogs in the village of Majalgaon, in the state of Maharashtra, by dragging them to the top of buildings and trees and dropping them.

In 2020, a mother and four of her children were crushed to death at their home in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, after a wall was brought down by a troop of monkeys.

The five victims were killed by falling masonry after the wall was ‘violently shaken’ by monkeys while the family slept in the courtyard.

In 2019, a 50-year-old man died in Sambhal after falling from a terrace at his home when he was attacked by monkeys.

Reports at the time said it was the sixth monkey-related death in Sambhal during 2019 alone.

Just months earlier, a one-and-a-half-month-old infant was killed by a monkey which apparently jumped into her cot to steal her milk bottle.

Also in the same year a monkey killed a 60-year-old man and injured nine others after going on the rampage through a town in central India.

In 2018, a 58-year-old woman suffered severe injuries and died after she was attacked by a monkey outside her home in Agra, Uttar Pradesh.
