Gran who organised for daughter-in-law to be murdered in 'honour killing' for cheating on her son is FREED from jail | The Sun

A GRANDMOTHER jailed for murdering her son's wife in an "honour killing" has been released from jail after 16 years.

Surjit Kaur Athwal, 27, was murdered after being lured to India in 1998.

Bachan Kau Athwal was jailed alongside her son Sukhdave in 2007 for organising the murder.

It has now been reported that Athwal was released from prison in August last year.

She was ordered to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison by Judge Giles Forrester.

The Parole Board recommended that Athwal, said to have been in poor health, should be released on licence.

Despite an appeal by Justice Secretary Dominic Raab, the Parole Board rejected his concerns.

In May last year, she slapped her daughter during a prison visit and assaulted a member of staff

In Athwal's appeal, the prison offender manager said that before the onset of dementia she had not been aggressive.

Surjit failed to return to her home in Hayes, West London after a trip to a family wedding in India.

Athwal accompanied her daughter-in-law on the trip in December 1998.

The Old Bailey heard howSurjit was forced to marry Sukhdave at 16. She was bullied by the family during her marriage and later murdered due to fears she was planning on divorcing her husband.

Jailing the mother and son in 2007 Judge Giles Forrester said the murder was “unspeakable”.

He said: "This was a heinous crime characterized by great wickedness.

“There was no motive worthy of the name. You did it because you thought she had brought shame on your family.”

Surjit's sister later founded True Honour to highlight the issue of "honour killings."

It took nearly 10 years for the family to be brought to justice.
