Happiest place to live in UK disclosed – see if your town makes the list

Cambridge, Brighton, Bristol, Newcastle, and London are home to the most satisfied working Brits in the UK, according to the latest study by Glassdoor.

Average job satisfaction across the whole of the UK is currently 75%, however that number peaks for residents in Cambridge who are on average 78% satisfied.

Fellow cities Brighton, Bristol, Newcastle, and London all achieved a 77% satisfaction rate, which also clinched them top spots in this year’s ranking.

Locations were also ranked on individual traits, which saw Newcastle take the top spot for best diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

Meanwhile, Brighton, which came second in the overall ranking, took the top spot for pay, senior leadership, and work-life balance.

Although London did make the top five, the capital was much further behind in terms of some traits like work-life balance and pay.

This year’s ranking was compiled by researchers who analysed 100,000 workplace reviews left by employees throughout 2022.

Lauren Thomas, UK economist at Glassdoor, said: “Smaller cities are winning the hearts of workers.”

“London is often romanticised as the city to reach the peak of your career and earning capacity, but Glassdoor’s latest analysis shows that you can find a job with a great salary and work-life balance outside the M25.

“With its position as the UK’s sixth best city for work-life balance, London is living up to its reputation as a pressure cooker.

“The capital’s amazing career opportunities and top pay are commonly cited to justify the stress, however, it seems that job seekers don’t always agree; London placed sixth for compensation and benefits – despite the highest salaries in the country.

“While this doesn’t necessarily mean London salaries are low, it could be a strong indicator that rising rents and house prices, the cost of living crisis and inflation are making the city unaffordable.”
