Headmaster wanted to run primary school on remote Scottish island

Wanted: £61,000-a-year headmaster to run primary school on one of Scotland’s most remote islands that has just FOUR pupils

Islanders on Foula, one of Scotland’s most remote islands, are seeking a headmaster to run their primary school that has just four pupils and another child at the nursery.

The island, which is 4.9 square miles, lies approximately 16 miles west of the main island at Shetland, with just 28 people currently living there.

Beverley McPherson, who ran the island’s single-room school for four years, has retired.

The post has a salary of £61,374 per annum, including a distant islands allowance of £2,397 per annum and a remote school allowance of £3,237 per annum. 

There is also a rented three-bedroomed home, which is made available to the headteacher, the advert states.

The school sits on the eastern side of the island and has a nursery, kitchen, community hall and solar array.

Several other islanders also work part-time at the primary school teaching art and information technology.

Shetland Island Council said applicants for the job will find a ‘welcoming community’ on Foula where they can ‘create an idyllic island home’.

Advertising the post, Shetland Islands Council said: ‘We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for an enthusiastic headteacher to work in Foula.’

It states it is looking for a head teacher or aspiring headteacher who is ‘looking for an exciting new challenge’ to be ‘part of a friendly, dynamic island community with a slower pace of life’.

The job specification reads: ‘Are you a headteacher or aspiring headteacher looking for an exciting new challenge? Do you dream of being part of a friendly, dynamic island community with a slower pace of life?

‘Qualities we are looking for in the successful candidate are: a can-do attitude, vision, energy, initiative, good communication skills and self-discipline.’

Those interested have until June 6 to apply for the post.
