Huckleberry Roasters to replace bakery on South Broadway in Denver

Huckleberry Roasters doesn’t like to let a good space go to waste.

Two weeks after owner Koan Goedman told BusinessDen that the local coffee shop will fill Allegro Coffee Roasters’ space on Tennyson Street, he announced the address of another planned location in Baker.

Huckleberry Roasters is going in at 277 Broadway, formerly home to Sugar Bakeshop.

Huckleberry Roasters used to sell coffee to Sugar Bakeshop and leased the 1,200-square-foot space in June.

“Huckleberry is interested in having a presence in a lot of Denver’s neighborhoods,” Goedman said. “Obviously, it’s a little different now. But I think in the past, if you needed to identify a couple of neighborhoods where you were guaranteed foot traffic, Baker was one and so was Tennyson, along with downtown.”

Goedman plans to open both the Baker and Tennyson locations this fall. The Baker location will have a more limited menu than Tennyson, serving basic options like toast, pastries and breakfast burritos.

“We had heard the space was available and were initially feeling daunted by perhaps trying to do multiple at once. But at the end of the day, our broker suggested we come check it out,” Goedman said. “We were drawn to the space because it’s at the bottom of condos and apartments and next door to Corepower Yoga. Plus, we’re good friends with TRVE Brewing folks down the street.”

Goedman, 40, and his business partner Jason Farrar started Huckleberry Roasters as a wholesale coffee business in 2012. They opened its first coffee shop at 4301 N. Pecos St. in Sunnyside the next year and another within Dairy Block in downtown Denver in 2018.

Goedman also plans to open a Wheat Ridge location.

Sugar Bakeshop was owned by Natalie Slevin, who closed it in March to focus on her most popular product: The Popster, a vegan take on the classic Pop-Tart. Slevin told BusinessDen this month that she is still working on her business plan.
