Jill Biden thought she was a “failure” and something was “wrong” with her because her first marriage ended in divorce, she says in a new interview.

The first lady opened up about her first husband Bill Stevenson, who has claimed she cheated on him with President Joe Biden while they were married — leading to their divorce in 1975 after five years of marriage.

“I didn’t know anybody who had been divorced. I felt like it was a failure on my part. I lost my self esteem because I kept thinking, ‘What’s wrong with me, why couldn’t I make this work?’” she told Kelly Clarkson on Thursday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”

The First Lady, who was interviewed in the East Room of the White House, said it took her “at least a year to get on my feet again” — and then she met Joe.

“And then, just unexpectedly, I met Joe. I had met him once before but it was kind of a blind date when he called me,” she recalled, without going into further detail.

Biden then doled out advice to the American Idol winner, who is going through her own divorce from Brandon Blackstock.

“I look back on it now and I think, you know, if I hadn’t gotten divorced, I never would’ve met Joe. I wouldn’t have the beautiful family I have now,” she said.

“This is what I would say to you if I were your mother. My mother always said to me, ‘Things are going to look better tomorrow.’ And if you can take one day at a time, things will get better.”

Jill and Joe married in 1977, two years after her divorce.

In August, Stevenson came forward with his affair accusations, saying he and his then-wife grew close to Joe in 1972 while working on his first campaign to represent Delaware in the US Senate.

That same year, Joe’s first wife Neilia and their infant daughter were killed in a car crash that left sons Beau and Hunter seriously injured.

Stevenson claimed he first suspected an affair in 1974 — when Jill allegedly passed up a chance to meet Bruce Springsteen in New Jersey.

“I asked Jill to go with me and she said no — she had things to do, she had to look after Joe’s kids, Beau and Hunter,” Stevenson recalled. “It was kind of a big deal to go meet Springsteen. I had no idea she and Joe were that kind of friendly.”

The Biden campaign declined to comment at the time.
