List of schools closed across England and Wales today

List of schools closed across England and Wales today as thousands of teachers go on strike in bitter pay row – is your school affected?

  • Thousands of National Education Union (NEU) teachers are striking today
  • It comes amid the ongoing pay dispute between the NEU and the Government

Thousands of teachers have walked out from schools this morning in a bitter row over pay, affecting some seven million pupils.

The strikes in England and Wales – which are the first of seven days worth in February and March – follow failed talks on Monday between Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and the general secretaries of unions representing teachers and headteachers. Teachers in Scotland, meanwhile, are in the middle of a 16-day rolling programme of strikes.

After the walkouts were confirmed, parents and guardians up and down the country are now being forced to juggle their plans and work commitments as their children spend the day away from the classroom.

Around 85% of schools will be either fully or partially closed by the strike action today, the general secretary of the National Education Union has said.

Speaking outside Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham, south London, Dr Mary Bousted told the BBC: ‘About 85% of schools will be affected – either fully closed or partially closed – today.’

She said striking teachers have received ‘many’ messages of support from parents.

‘We are very sorry that parents have been so inconvenienced by this strike action,’ she said.

‘We know that for many of them it will be very difficult to get childcare.

‘But we’re also receiving many more messages from parents who say ‘Well, something has to be done, my child is being taught by supply teacher after supply teacher’.’

However, the Education Secretary said she expects most schools will open despite the action.

Ms Keegan told BBC Breakfast: ‘We did do a survey and we have rung round a lot of schools as well and that told us told us that the majority of schools will be open but some will have restrictions for different cohorts.’

Ms Keegan said the the country could not afford above-inflation pay awards.

‘What is not realistic is for us to be looking at inflation or inflation-busting pay rises. We cannot risk fuelling inflation with inflation-busting pay rises. We have to look after everybody in the economy,’ she said.

Here, MailOnline looks at the schools across the country which are shut as a result of the action today.
