Emmanuel Macron’s entire foreign policy strategy is in ruins after Australia scrapped a £48billion French-designed submarine deal. Mr Macron had previously boasted about the agreement, calling it the “deal of the century”. However, the Australian U-turn has left the French President humiliated on the world stage, according to France24’s French Politics Editor Marc Perelman.

He said: “We saw French fury, those are the words used by the French foreign minister.

“We know that the French embassy has cancelled a gala in Washington DC. That is a symbol of anger.

“The Americans will try to placate the French by saying nice words but the French president has not met his American counterpart in a solo trip since the election.

“He is not scheduled to go to New York for the UN General Assembly next week, where they could have smoothed things over.”

Mr Perelman continued: “The French are clearly not happy.

“They claim it is an attack on Europe, but mainly it is all about France because other European countries tried to get that ‘deal of the century’ and failed to do so, mainly the Germans.

“This is going to cripple France’s foreign strategy.

“Macron explained that he had two pillars for the Indo-Pacific – one was Australia and the other was India.

“It was intended to show that the region should not be dominated by China. But, if one pillar is not there anymore, he doesn’t have a strategy.

“He can deal with India, but he needs a further presence in the region so this was strategically and commercially a big hit. It is also a symbolic dispute as well.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday called France a vital partner in a bid at calming French anger.

The surprise AUKUS deal, which was announced late on Wednesday, would establish a security partnership for the Indo-Pacific that would help Australia acquire US nuclear-powered submarines.

France reacted angrily to the loss of the deal, calling it a “stab in the back”.

On Twitter, N Wilcock tweeted: “Not Macron having a major tantrum over UK, USA, Australia partnership.”

Kgborland added: “Paris is throwing an outright TANTRUM over losing that nuclear submarine contract.”

Generation Frexit leader Charles-Henry Gallois similarly dismissed Emmanuel Macron’s anger.

He reminded President Macron’s allies that Germany and Sweden were the first to try to “torpedo” the Australian deal, long before Joe Biden managed to sneak in.
