A 23-year-old Wisconsin man has been arrested in the slaying of his father as well as the disappearance of his mother — after his father’s dismembered remains were found by authorities, police said.
Chandler Halderson, of Windsor, reported his parents, Bart Halderson, 50, and Krista Halderson, 53, missing from their home on Oak Springs Circle on July 7, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office said.
He told authorities that his parents had planned to spend the July Fourth weekend at their cabin in White Lake in Langlade County but never returned.
The following day, police found a dismembered torso in Cottage Grove not far from where a witness previously spotted Chandler reversing his vehicle with the “rear hatch open” into a field.
Police identified the remains as belonging to Bart, whose cause of death was determined to be “homicidal violence including firearm injury.”
Chandler was taken to Dane County Jail on suspicion of providing false information on a missing person, the Wisconsin State Journal reported.
He’s also expected to face charges for intentional homicide, hiding a corpse and mutilating a corpse, the outlet reported.
Deputy District Attorney William Brown said formal charges are set to be filed Thursday.
“He has lied dozens of times in the course of this investigation,” Brown said, the paper reported.
Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said this week authorities are continuing to search the family’s cabin as well as the area where the remains were found for Chandler’s mother.
“We are optimistic in regards to her whereabouts and where she is at and we will let the evidence of this investigation tell us otherwise,” Barrett said during a press conference.
