Parts of the east are being warned to expect severe transport delays and disruption to businesses.
The Met Office, which has issued a yellow weather warning, said the downpours are expected from midday until the evening. A spokesman said: “The heavier rain is expected to move eastwards across the day, becoming slow moving across the east later on in the day.
“There is a chance of thunderstorms also and 30-40mm totals over a few hours is possible.”
The weather forecasting service advised people to continue checking its app and website for flood warnings in their area.The heavy rain comes just 10 days after parts of England, including Birkenhead, experienced late summer flooding.Then some areas enjoyed a spell of September sun this week.
Temperatures today will reach 70F (21C) in the North and 68F (20C) in the South – slightly above the average of 64F (18C) for this time of the year.
There will be some warm sunshine developing, particularly in the South-east.
