The migrants were part of a group of around 50 Eritreans who were witnessed walking along the track in the Beau-Marais district of the port city on Thursday, November 4. The victims have not been identified.

In addition to the UK-bound migrant who has died, three other individuals were seriously injured when they were hit by a train in Calais.

According to regional leader Franck Dhersin, one of the injured is in an “absolute emergency” condition.

A source investigating the incident said the train accident happened at around 6.30pm on Thursday, close to Calais port.

The Daily Mail noted that the source had said: “There were around 50 Eritreans close to the track, and some 12 of them actually running on it in very poor weather conditions.

“It was raining hard and visibility was very poor.”

The source said they believed the men were on their way to a nearby camp they have set up.

They added: “The driver of a TER Dunkirk to Calais train did not see them, and there was a collision.

“‘One man died instantly, while others were injured — three very seriously.”

As a result of the incident, train operator SNCF said that traffic would remain suspended on the Calais-Dunkerque line until Friday morning.

It comes after reports that two other migrants drowned at sea as they tried to get to England.

French authorities have also warned that an “incalculable number” of would-be asylum seekers would be arriving in the area.

Mr Dhersin, a spokesman for the Hauts-de-France regional council described the situation as “terrible”.

He reported that there are increasing numbers of migrants arriving in the regions of Calais and Dunkirk.

He said this would lead to “more and more accidents and incidents” as they tried to get to Britain to claim asylum.

He said: “It is a situation which has become terrible for everyone.”

Recent figures show that more than 20,000 migrants have arrived in the UK so far this year.

This is more than double the total for the whole of 2020.

Tensions have soared in recent weeks between France and the United Kingdom over the management of migrants in Calais.

Earlier this week, Calais mayor Natacha Bouchart told French radio station RTL that Britain should introduce tougher immigration regulations to deter people from making the treacherous journey across the Channel from France.

She said: “We know that a migrant who arrives in England is taken care of.

“They are housed, they have an income.

“For them, England remains an El Dorado but the British Government does not have the courage to review its legislation in the field.”
