This is the heartwarming moment a dementia-hit Liverpool fan starts singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ when his daughter reveals his bedroom decorated with club memorabilia.

Alfred Johnson, 68, moved in with his daughter Donna, 38, at her home in Walton, Liverpool, when he was diagnosed with Lewy Body dementia three years ago.

Donna decided to transform his bedroom into a shrine to Liverpool FC – the club he has supported since he was a boy – after the father-of-four was taken to hospital with a blocked bowel earlier this month.

She spent £500 on various decor for the room including scarves, a floor mat, bedsheets and even wallpaper with the Liverpool FC insignia, which took her a week to renovate.

Revealing the finished room to her father for the first time this week, Donna was moved to tears as he started singing along to the club’s iconic anthem.

Footage shows retired carpenter Alfred walking up the stairs with ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by Gerry and the Pacemakers heard in the background ahead of the big reveal, before breaking into a smile as he enters his room.

Mother-of-two Donna then starts singing along to the song, but is left sobbing when her father joins in while sat on his new bed.

Donna then shows Alfred a Liverpool FC t-shirt that she’s also bought for him, and says: ‘Told you it would be a surprise didn’t I?’

She said: ‘As soon as I put the music on and started walking him up the stairs I could feel the tears coming.

‘He was sat singing and then started rattling off names of all the old players like Kenny Dalglish and Tommy Smith, so I think it has triggered some memories for him.

‘When he started singing along and I saw his face beaming at me I just started sobbing.

‘It was just pure excitement on his face, it was just so joyful seeing him that happy.’

She added: ‘I’ve always been a daddy’s girl, he means the absolute world to me. When he got sick I refused to put him into care and I became his full time carer.

‘When he got ill he started calling me Betty but now he calls me “mum”. The first day he called me mum it broke my heart.

‘These special moments with him are so precious.’

Alfred was diagnosed with dementia in October 2018 aged 65 and Donna became his full-time carer.

Donna said: ‘He was born and bred in Liverpool and he’s supported them all his life.

‘He absolutely loves his new room, he’s barely come out of it since I showed him it for the first time.’
