Moment sword-wielding attacker is shot by cops after hacking four worshippers at Indonesian church

This shock footage shows the terrifying moment a sword-weilding maniac stormed into a church and hacked at worshippers before being shot by cops.

The man seriously injured four people, including a priest, during his bloody attack at morning mass in Yogyakarta, Indonesia today.

Police said they were investigating possible motives for the assault by the suspect, believed to be a university student.

A Yogyakarta Police spokesman said: "We cannot confirm yet if this was a terror-related incident.

"We can confirm the suspect has been detained and is being treated at hospital."

In the video, the suspect can be seen brandishing his sword at the front of the church as terrified worshippers try to flee the building.

Shouting can be heard as the attacker begins to run down the aisle, raising his weapon.

One petrified churchgoer throws bibles at the man in a bid to throw him off track, while another man is seen making for the door.

The video then cuts out before police arrive at the scene.

The police spokesman said the suspect had been shot in the stomach.

Witnesses say the injured include a police officer who tried to subdue the attacker with the help of the priest.

They suffered back, neck and head wounds but are said to be in a stable condition.
