Morrisons reveals strict new measures to buy alcohol – and shoppers aren't happy | The Sun

MORRISONS has introduced a strict new measure to buy alcohol and shoppers aren’t happy about it.

The supermarket giant has started locking away its alcohol behind glass cases meaning customers can’t simply browse the shelves.

Instead, visitors to the branch off Hagley Road, Five Ways in Birmingham, have to press a button and then wait for an assistant to turn up who then unlocks the door.

The “buzz for booze” measure appears to have been introduced as a way to reduce theft but it hasn’t gone down well with shoppers.

Kurtis Roberts, from Ladywood, was going round the store’s aisles on April 12 when he came across customers waiting around the alcohol for an employee to assist them.

The 50-year-old said: "It's a shame Morrisons has to resort to this, but with the cost of living crisis I suppose that theft is on the increase.

“I was actually in the same aisle on the opposite side picking up a couple of bottles of coke, when the assistant asked if she could help me with my alcohol purchase.

"Another guy responded by saying that it was him that pressed the button and another guy said that he was also waiting."

Another customer wrote in a Facebook post in February: "I tried to buy some booze from Morrisons (Hagley Road) and they now have their liquor encased under lock and key.

“You now need to press the big buzzer for an authorised assistant to open up and give you booze. Which is all recorded.
