A mum wept in court as she was told she’d avoided being sent to prison despite leading cops on a 90mph chase while her two young children were in the back of her car.

Tegan Bulley, 29, raced through residential streets, hitting speed bumps while driving her BMW at more than 70mph in Southampton in January last year.

The mum-of-two overtook an unmarked police car before driving through red lights at high speed and accelerating up the wrong side of the road as the officers gave chase.

The police lost her when they had to slow down in residential areas – but when Bulley was finally nabbed, the cops found that the car didn’t have child seats for either of the kids, who were aged five and eight.

Prosecutor Siobhan Linsey told Southampton Crown Court that police chased Bulley through a 30mph residential area, as she pulled into other roads and T-junctions “without any hesitation”.

They followed the white Beamer to the A336, where it reached speeds of 90mph.

Ms Linsey said: “[Bulley] was going so fast for the conditions that the back end of the BMW was spinning from side to side and the police officers got the impression that she very nearly lost control at that point.”

Bulley gave the police a false name and claimed that her BMW 3 Series had been stolen.

But she pleaded guilty in court to one count of dangerous driving, and sobbed as she was spared an immediate prison sentence.

Khalid Missouri, in mitigation, said his client suffered from anxiety, and had been in a “controlling relationship”.

He said: “That man was in the car with the two children. She didn't realise at the time but he was wanted by police.

“She attempted to stop but before she could he shouted at her to drive on and started to make threats about her children being taken away from her if she stopped.”

Judge Brian Forster QC handed Bulley an eight-month jail sentence but suspended it for 15 months, and disqualified her from driving for a year.

Sentencing her, the judge said: “You caused considerable risk to members of the community.

“You drove on the wrong side of the road, you drove through a red light and in reality you were doing everything in your power to get away from the police.

“You had two children in the car aged five and eight. They were not restrained as they should have been.

“This is a very bad case of dangerous driving.”

But he suspended the prison sentence because she was “vulnerable” to the other man in the car who got out and ran off.

She was ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work and 20 days with the probation service.

She was also told to pay £10 a month for a year.

The judge added: “Please don't ever put yourself in this situation [again], because if you do you put yourself at risk of having to serve the prison sentence.”
