Nadine Dorries is today unveiled as the Daily Mail’s new columnist. And to kick things off, the former culture secretary, author of 16 novels – and still a powerhouse of creative energy at 66 – gives her most wide-ranging and revelatory interview ever in Saturday’s paper and exclusively right now on The Mail+.

She tells Frances Hardy about the poverty of her childhood, growing up on a deprived council estate in Liverpool, and the influence of her Mum Sylvia, who spurred her ambition and drive to succeed.

Nadine Dorries describes her joy at becoming a grandmother – and her delight at being invited to the King’s Coronation

She recalls the litany of tragedies that have shaped her: the awful day when she found her adored father dead in bed, aged just 42. Her brother’s premature death in a motorcycle accident when he was 27. The suicide of a dear cousin who died taking her three young children with her. And the death, four years ago, from cancer of her husband Paul just months after their rapprochement following a divorce they both regretted bitterly.

She reveals, too, how she has drawn on her eventful early life – remote from the rarefied world of Westminster where few MPs know what it is to endure gnawing hunger pangs – to inspire her novels which are set in the Liverpool of her childhood.

Despite the grief and loss, she remains hopeful, amusing, entertaining. She describes her joy at becoming a grandmother, her delight at being invited to the King’s Coronation and reveals that, after years of mourning her late husband, she might just be ready to date again. Click here to read her soul-baring interview on The Mail+.
