North Korea has fired a suspected ballistic missile into the ocean in its fourth weapons launch this month, according to officials in South Korea and Japan.

Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in Seoul reported the launch on early Tuesday morning, but did not release further information on the projectile.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that the rocket was fired from near North Pyongyang's Sunan Airfield.

The Japanese Coast Guard meanwhile released a statement warning ships in the Sea of Japan to be aware of potential falling objects, although no damage has yet been reported.

Chief cabinet secretary Hirokazu Matsuno also condemned the launches as a threat to the region's peace and security.

It would be North Korea's fourth missile in a month after a string of high-profile launches followed a vow from Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un to step up their military capabilities in 2022.

All North Korean ballistic missiles and nuclear tests have been banned by UN Security Council's resolutions.

The country has said it is open to discussions with the United States if they drop "hostile policies" including trade sanctions.

North Korea argue the missile tests and other military activities are for self-defence, and are the same as those undertaken by other nations.
