A burst pipe turned streets into rivers in West London this morning – with water gushing into shops and multi-million pound homes.

The 30-inch wide water main broke shortly before 8.30am, sending what witnesses described as a ‘whooshing river’ down Notting Hill Gate.

The water then flowed down nearby residential roads, causing what officials described as ‘severe’ flooding. The basements of around 20 properties have been affected and responders are handing out sandbags.

Video showed the high street flooded between Pembridge Road and Palace Gardens Terrace, with water high on the pavement by shops including Vodafone, Snappy Snaps, Lloyds Bank and Natwest.

Hundreds of Thames Water customers in the neighbourhood – scene of the famous 1999 romantic comedy Notting Hill – have been left without water or with lower pressure than usual.

The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea estimated that 20 properties had been affected, but a breakdown between houses and shops is not yet available.

Notting Hill Gate underground station is still open and has not been flooded.

Thames Water said it had received more than 100 calls from customers saying there were problems with the water supply.

A spokesman said: ‘We’re sorry to customers in the W2, W8 and W11 areas who have no water or lower pressure than normal this morning due to a burst pipe.

‘Our engineers were quickly on the scene to investigate and we’ll do all we can to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

‘In the meantime we’re pro-actively contacting everyone in the affected area who has pre-registered with us as having special requirements, such as being medically reliant on water, so we can make sure we give them the help and support they need.’
