Pictures have now emerged of 1,066,214 vaccine doses being disposed of at a dump in Nigeria. The doses were thrown away after they passed their expiry date. The vaccine doses were destroyed at the Gosa dumpsite in Abuja, Nigeria on December 22.

Faisal Shuaib, head of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), said the country was receiving vaccine supplies from western countries with short shelf lives.

Due to this, Nigeria has struggled to use the vaccine donations from other countries, despite the low number of people inoculated in the state.

Mr Shuaib claimed Nigeria will no longer accept vaccine supplies with short shelf lives, despite the country’s low vaccination rate.

According to Our World in Data, Nigeria has only vaccinated 1.96 percent of its population, Africa is only reporting a total number of 8.57 percent.

In comparison, 81.9 percent of the UK has received a second dose of the vaccine and 52 percent have received a booster shot at the time of writing.

Before the vaccines were destroyed, a Nigerian government source told Reuters: “Nigeria is doing everything it can.

“But it’s struggling with short shelf life vaccines.

“Now supply is unpredictable and they’re sending too much.”

According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 15 million vaccine doses were scrapped in the US between March and September.

As reported by The Guardian, 224,000 doses went unused in Louisiana.

In Tennessee, up to 200,000 doses went unused during the same time period.

As Omicron begins to rage in the US, Joe Biden urged the public to receive a vaccine and claimed it was their “patriotic duty” to do so.

Mr Biden added: “Folks are asking, what can you do to make yourself and your family feel safer and be safer.

“The answer is simple. Get your booster shot. Wear a mask.

“You have an obligation to yourselves, to your family and frankly, I know I’ll get criticised for this, to your country.

“Get vaccinated now. It’s free, it’s convenient.

“I promise you it saves lives. And I honest to God believe it’s your patriotic duty.”
