A horrific video shows two boys allegedly set a pair of pit bulls on a terrified cat "for amusement" and watch as the feline is torn apart.

In the clip, filmed by a doorbell camera in Pennsylvania, Buddy the cat is relaxing outside a Philadelphia home when the boys, aged 17 and 12, approach and start shouting.

The cat instinctively arches his back but doesn't have time to escape when the youths appear to unclip the dogs' leashes and let them go.

Appearing to laugh, the boys watch as the dogs instantly overpower Buddy and corner him against a fence, ripping into his belly.

One of the boys stands over his dog and yells: "Yeah, get him! Good boy!"

The cat's tormented yowls and the shouting of the boys alert a man inside the house, who comes outside to see what is happening on his porch.

Putting the dogs back on their leash, the boys, wearing hoodies that hide their faces, look like they are about to leave.

Nicole Wilson, Director of Humane Law Enforcement at the PSPCA, told NBC10 that Buddy is in critical condition after the attack on Tuesday (March 22).

She said: "Putting an animal on another animal for amusement is considered animal fighting so that would be a felony under that."

Heartbreaking images show Buddy unconscious and on oxygen while hooked up to various monitors at the vet.

Ms Wilson added: "We really want to address this because, from the video, you can see these individuals took an opportunity to harm another living creature that was doing nothing to harm them."

In an update on Friday (March 25) the PSPCA said the suspects had surrendered and been charged with felony animal fighting, felony aggravated animal cruelty and a conspiracy charge.

These crimes do not fall under offenses that permit juveniles to be charged as adults, it added.

The dogs were taken into the custody of the PSPCA and were put on hold attached to the investigation.

Buddy the cat is still alive and vets are hopeful he will make a recovery.
