PIZZA vending machine has customers line up for £9.95 treats

Robo-cook: Britain’s first-ever PIZZA vending machine has customers line up for £9.95 treats at touch of a button

  • Pizza Rebellion launched its first machine offering  in West Ashling, West Sussex
  • Will expand business by opening machine opposite Chichester Railway Station
  • The new machine will be aimed at  ‘late-night out of hours sort of customers’

The company behind the UK’s first robotic pizza vending machine offering customers five flavours of topping in under five minutes is set to expand business.

Pizza Rebellion launched its first machine stocked with 70 handmade pizzas outside The Richmond Arms in West Ashling, West Sussex, in March.

The machine, which charges customers between £8.95 and £9.95 for a pizza, saw customers choose between ‘totally modern’ flavours, including Pulverised Pepperoni, Pig n’ Pineapple and Rib and Pickle.

Due to its success, business owners Will and Emma Jack have now decided to set up a second machine opposite Chichester Railway Station.

The machine will be aimed at ‘people commuting late and coming from pubs and clubs’, the owners have said.

Mr Jack, 46, said: ‘We were always looking for a firm location where the demographic is right.

‘It’s near a train station and the college and it will serve the late-night out of hours sort of customers.

‘It’s for people commuting late and coming from pubs and clubs.

‘That’s the sort of market we’re looking at.

‘It’s an area with a lot of movement and traffic. It fits in well. It doesn’t impact the environment around it.’

The pizzas are stored in a refrigerated cold room before being cooked and returned in a pizza box to the customer.

They are cooked in a patented oven using an electric pulsed jet heat method.

There is also the option of selling raw pizzas which people can then cook back at home.

Mr Jack said: ‘We’ve done it completely blind. It’s unmanned.

‘It’s not something that has been done before so there is no blueprint or boxes to tick.

‘There’s lots of barriers.

‘It’s something which is really fun and not junk. It is healthy for a pizza, and it’s a fresh made product.

‘We’ve cooked at the highest level and we’ve used all our experience in the food industry.’

The couple used to run an award winning wood-fire pizza business and own The Richmond Arm pub, where the first machine was launched.

They decided to set up the french-made machine after ‘six months of thorough research’ and ‘ironing out technical issues’.

Mr Jack said: ‘We are a local business, building a fun and new brand. It’s an exciting project moving forward.

‘Hopefully we get support for other areas. Ideally, we want five or six around Arun and Chichester.

‘It’s a solid business to expand on further afield.

‘We are creating jobs as well as it’s a handmade product.’
