Police hunt for two young women over spate of fires at historic botanical gardens in north Wales that has been targeted by vandals

Police are on the hunt for two young women over a spate of fires at a historic botanical gardens in north Wales. 

Officers released CCTV images of the women after the latest fire ripped through the site in Rhyl, north Wales. 

Vandals have also targeted the beauty spot and in an earlier attack a giant penis was painted on to the bowling green.  

North Wales Police posted: ‘Do you recognise these young ladies? We’d like to speak to them in relation to fires being lit at the Botanical Gardens in Rhyl earlier this month.’

The botanical gardens were established in 1878 with avenues, lily pond and conservatories.

After a chequered history the gardens fell into neglect but have been reinstated since 2004 by the Rhyl South West Central Resident’s Association.

But it has been hit with anti-social behaviour including vandalism. The local MP called for action following a dramatic growth in anti-social behaviour.

Other incidents which have also occurred include a a dog being thrown over the two-metre high fence around the bowling green, volunteers being verbally abused and bike skid marks on the green.

A memorial tree has also been badly vandalised.

Dr James Davies, MP for Vale of Clwyd, said: ‘The situation at the Botanical Gardens is getting out of hand and needs to be addressed quickly. The lack of respect by those responsible is unacceptable.’

‘The extent of damage at the gardens is substantial.

Denbighshire County Council have introduced new measures, which they say have been successful so far.

These measures include commissioning a security company, as a trial, to patrol the park and lock the gates each evening and the installation of nine additional CCTV cameras in the park.
