Fifty-eight minutes.

That’s how long the horror lasted inside a King Soopers store in south Boulder this past Monday.

Ten dead, including grocery store employees and shoppers, and a Boulder police officer who ran toward the gunfire. A suspect marched out of the store, barefoot and wearing only shorts, blood pouring down his leg.

Waves of grief reverberated through Boulder, and across Colorado, over the subsequent days as the nation’s attention fell yet again to the site of the latest mass killing.

As investigators continue trying to answer the most basic question — why? — Denver Post reporters Shelly Bradbury, Noelle Phillips and Jon Murray set out to reconstruct what happened inside that supermarket Monday afternoon, interviewing 24 witnesses and survivors, reviewing police records, visiting the site, poring over video taken at the scene and listening to police radio transmissions.

This resulting story, an account of those 58 minutes, of the pop-pop-pop of gunfire, of women and men hiding for their lives in a cavernous grocery store, is a chilling read. it’s a look inside the terror that Americans — and Coloradans in particular — know all too well, the mass shooting. The explosion of violence in the most mundane of settings. Indiscriminate and pointless killing.

And this time it happened in Boulder.
