The Prime Minister has won a vote of no confidence among Conservative MPs tonight.

He needed at least 180 Tory MPs to vote in his favour in the secret ballot, and he won by 211 with 148 voting against his leadership.

The Conservative Party's 1922 committee chairman Sir Graham Brady announced this morning (Monday, June 6) that the threshold for letters being sent to him by rebel MPs in favour of a vote had been reached.

The 54 letters total was nearly reached two weeks ago, according to a source speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, but the tipping point was allegedly the booing of the PM during the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations over the weekend.

Before the vote, a spokesman for the PM said: "Tonight is a chance to end months of speculation and allow the government to draw a line and move on, delivering on the people’s priorities.

“The PM welcomes the opportunity to make his case to MPs and will remind them that when they’re united and focused on the issues that matter to voters there is no more formidable political force.”

Despite winning, the PM's job looks set to remain on the line, as previous party leaders to face no confidence votes have all left the role within a few years – from John Major and Margaret Thatcher to Theresa May.

An early General Election had been mooted, with talks of it being held as soon as July being on the cards – but it is officially scheduled for around January, 2025, as Parliament will officially be dissolved on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

The Prime Minister had been on rocky ground for the last year, after it was revealed that he attended several parties at Number 10 during lockdown – he was only fined for one of those by the Met Police.

And on Saturday night, during the Party at the Palace concert, legendary presenter and actor Stephen Fry took a golden opportunity to have a dig at the Prime Minister.

The former host of game show QI, and best friend of actor Hugh Laurie, was on stage introducing the Queen's son Prince Charles when he suddenly made a sly dig at the Prime Minister – who was in the audience.

He said: “How many local sewage works has Her Majesty opened with a bright smile? How many plaques unveiled? How many trees planted?

"How many ribbons cut, ships launched? How many prime ministers tolerated, for that alone no admiration is high enough."

Health Secretary Sajid Javid came out to bat for the PM on Sky News this morning when he said that he had “saved the country from Corbynism, delivered Brexit and dealt with a global pandemic”.
