Pueblo Police shoot suspect in leg Friday afternoon

Pueblo police officers exchanged gunshots with a suspect Friday afternoon throughout the Pueblo Grande mobile home park, eventually shooting the suspect in the leg, according to a news release from the City of Pueblo Police Department.

The suspect, James Justice, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the news release said. No officers were shot during the situation.

Pueblo police officers were responding to a report that a man had threatened two people with a handgun in the 4100 block of N. Elizabeth St. shortly after noon on Friday, the news release said.

One officer located a man matching the suspect’s description walking a few blocks from the alleged menacing. As the police officer approached, Justice allegedly fired several rounds at the cop, striking the officer’s patrol car.

The cop fired back but did not hit the suspect, police said.

Justice allegedly fled on foot toward a nearby mobile home park located at 999 Fortina Blvd. A group of officers moved in on the mobile home park, searching for Justice for about 30 minutes during which he “exchanged gunfire with officers” on multiple occasions as they moved throughout the mobile home park.

Pueblo Police did not immediately respond when asked how many shots officers and Justice fired.

Police eventually shot Justice in the leg and the 40-year-old man was taken into custody, the news release said.

Justice was on bond for assault on peace officer charges at the time of the incident, police said.

The Tenth Judicial District Critical Incident Team was activated and initiatated an investigation of the incident.

Three police officers have been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol. Pueblo Police did not immediately respond when asked the names of the officers on leave.
