London Mayor Sadiq Khan has said that ministers should make face masks on public transport compulsory again.

He said the voluntary system in England is not working and also signalled support for vaccine passports.

Mandatory rules on masks were ditched in July and fines of between £200 and £6,400 for failing to cover up were dropped.

However, wearing them is a condition of carriage on the capital’s transport network.

Appearing on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show yesterday, Mr Khan said: ‘There’s a couple of things we can be doing which I think we’re not. One is I think we should have face masks compulsory on public transport. This voluntary system, this condition of carriage, isn’t working as effectively as before.’

Mr Khan added that although Covid rates were stable, we needed to remain ‘vigilant’.

‘I think we may need vaccine passports,’ he said. ‘I think we’re not there yet, but we may need them.’

He added: ‘In principle I’m not against them, I’m really keen though to support our hospitality, our cultural and night-time industries, the good news is that because of responsibility of Londoners in having their jab, the numbers in London are pretty stable.

‘The transmission rate is stable, the case number is stable, the numbers of people with Covid in hospitals is far less than it was before Christmas, but we must be vigilant, so I support the Government having in their back pocket other things we can do if needed.’

Mr Khan added that although Covid rates were stable, we needed to remain ‘vigilant’. Passengers are pictured above on the London Underground on September 7th
