Storm Arwen forces Met Office to issue dangerous ice warnings for next two days

Forecasters have issued weather warnings for dangerous ice for the next two days as Storm Arwen continues to batter the UK.

The killer storm has unleashed mayhem across the country after temperatures plunged to -10C and parts of the country woke up to a blanket of snow, grounding more than 120 lorries on motorways.

Coasts were hit by 90mph winds and 30ft waves and three people have died from falling trees.

Last night, father-of-four Francis Lagan died after high winds caused a tree to fall on his car in Northern Ireland and on Saturday morning it was confirmed another man had died in a similar incident in Cumbria.

And today it was confirmed that a 35-year-old driver was killed when the a fell on his car on the B977 in Aberdeenshire around 5pm yesterday, the Sun reports.

Now, fresh weather warnings have been issued covering large swathes of the UK ahead of predicted snowfall this evening, the Mirror reports.

Yellow warnings are in place between 5pm today and 11pm tomorrow night as the weather continues to cause misery across the country.

Areas covered include most of Scotland, the North East, the East of England, Yorkshire and Staffordshire.

The Met Office warned: "Rain and sleet showers will continue Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday around northern and eastern Scotland and eastern England.

"These will turn to snow at times to low levels but mainly over modest high ground with some small further accumulations.

"Surfaces will remain wet from these showers with icy stretches likely to form readily Saturday evening.

"There is also likely to be some icy stretches forming where snow is already lying over parts of the high ground of northern England and Scotland.

"There is a chance of some more general snow falling over the far north and northwest of Scotland during Sunday morning and this may bring some local further small accumulations."

Yesterday 98mph winds were recorded in Northumberland, according to the Met Office.

It said on Twitter: "Many roads remain closed so please only travel if absolutely necessary."
