The latest adverse weather system has now been named by the forecaster as Storm Evert, bringing with it “unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain” to large southern areas of the country over the coming days. In its latest update, the Met Office tweeted: “#StormEvert has been named and is forecast to bring unseasonably strong winds and heavy rain to southern parts of the UK later today and into Friday.” A yellow weather warning is in place and covering much of southwest England and parts of Wales and is active from 8pm on Thursday until 12pm on Friday.

This states on the Met Office website: “Storm Evert will bring a spell of windy weather with coastal gales into southern parts of England and Wales during Thursday evening onwards through the night into Friday morning.

“Gusts of 45 to 55 mph are expected quite widely with a chance of gusts of 60 to 65 mph in the most exposed coastal spots.

“Parts of Cornwall and Wales will see the highest gusts. Winds will then ease from the west during Friday morning.

“Showery rain will accompany these high winds at times, some of this rain heavy.”

A more severe amber wind warning is also in place for parts of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which will become active from 9pm this evening and last through the night until 7am on Friday.

This warning reads: “Storm Evert will bring a swathe of very strong winds with coastal gales and severe gales into the Isles of Scilly later Thursday evening, these very strong winds then spreading into Cornwall during the early hours of Friday.

“Gusts of 55 to 65 mph are likely in coastal areas with a chance of gusts briefly reaching 75 mph in the most exposed coastal spots in Cornwall.
