A Tesla vehicle innocuously caught ablaze over the weekend which forced firefighters to come to the rescue and put out the inferno.

The Model S “spontaneously” caught fire on a California motorway on Saturday (January 28) afternoon.

According to authorities, firefighters had to use around 6,000 gallons of water to put out the flames.

According to officials from Sacramento Metro Fire, “nothing unusual” occurred before the electric vehicle's battery compartment “spontaneously caught fire.”

Emergency response to the fire included the arrival of two fire engines, a water tender and a ladder truck which shut down two lanes of traffic.

In order to access the underside of the car, fire crews were forced to use jacks and in order to cool the battery of the car, 6,000 gallons of water was needed to put out the fire due to the continual combustion of the lithium-ion battery cells.

The fire department posted a video on Twitter of firefighters hosing down the burning Tesla while other vehicles drove by on the motorway.

Despite the startling blaze, thankfully, no injuries were reported, however the Tesla was written off after suffering extreme damage.

The spontaneous combustion of Tesla's is not an anomaly as in June 2022, another Tesla Model S caught fire in California, despite sitting for three weeks in one location after being damaged in a collision.

In this case, almost 4,500 gallons of water was used to put out the fire which needed several attempts and after that didn't work, fire crews had to dig a small pit and then fill it with water, before lowering the car into the water-filled hole to put out the blaze.
