Thames riverbank deserted as Londoners stay home to ring in the New Year

THE banks of the Thames at Westminster were deserted last night after London’s New Year’s Eve party was scrapped.

The capital was set to be mostly silent as the Tier 4 curbs put paid to the traditional celebrations.

The streets would normally be thronged with crowds watching the fireworks along the river.

Police issued public order warnings for areas of London where large gatherings were rumoured to be planned.
