'THOUSANDS' of British brides may be facing disaster after a major US supplier declared bankruptcy.

"Affordable luxury" brand Alfred Angelo, based in Florida, made the shock announcement this morning – closing down its stores in the United States as well as its UK and Australia divisions.

The company supplies thousands of wedding dresses into the UK market, the Daily Mail reported.

A spokesperson told employees: "As a team we have unfortunately found out this devastating news with no prior notice and are just as shocked and saddened as I know you all are too.

"Together with all of you, the UK division was a vibrant and successful business, really going from strength to strength so the news from the US head office has inevitably hit us all hard and for that I am truly very sorry.

"We are all no longer employees of Alfred Angelo with immediate effect."

The UK division of the company was a finalist in the 2017 Bridal Buyer Awards just last week – but now suppliers are said to now be scrambling to get in touch with head office.

Meanwhile, a Facebook group set up to help businesses fulfil orders by pooling stock already has almost 120 members.

Traditional sayings are at risk of going extinct – how many do you recognise?

In a statement, the British Bridal Suppliers Association urged retailers to stay calm amid the confusion.

It said: "Retailers should try to remain calm whilst clarity is established on what they may have in place to deal with any outstanding orders. Rest assured that all BBSA members will work with retailers, so reach out to them, they will help in any way they can to get everyone through this difficult and unprecedented situation."

But the closure has sparked panic among customers in the US – with some reportedly even calling the police.

Brides-to-be were also seen trying to pick up their gowns only to find shops completely shut.

One angry customer took to social media, writing: "How dare Alfred Angelo ruin so many brides lives today!"
