Tough on crime? Tory minister brands Keir Starmer a ‘total fraud and the wettest Labour leader we’ve ever seen’ when it comes to tackling criminals and claims he is even worse than Jeremy Corbyn

A Tory minister yesterday labelled Sir Keir Starmer as the ‘wettest Labour leader on crime’ and worse than Jeremy Corbyn when it comes to justice.
In an extraordinary attack that follows a series of Labour adverts targeting the Conservatives’ record on justice, policing minister Chris Philp said the Opposition leader’s voting record exposed him as a ‘total fraud’ when it came to crime.
He added: ‘I think this [the attack advert] is pretty, pretty cheeky. When it comes to crime, Keir Starmer is a total fraud and my view is that he is the wettest Labour leader we’ve ever seen.
‘If you look at their votes in Parliament, Keir Starmer’s Labour Party have voted against keeping rapists and child sex offenders in prison for longer.’

A Labour advert recently claimed that Rishi Sunak did not think adults convicted of child sex assaults should go to prison.
Mr Philp said: ‘He did that attack ad talking about sentencing, then it turned out he was a member of the Sentencing Council that set those sentencing guidelines. So you can see why I think he is a total fraud when it comes to making these strong claims about crime and why I say he is the wettest Labour leader on crime that we have seen and he has some fairly tough competition for that accolade.’
Asked if Sir Keir was worse than his predecessor Mr Corbyn, Mr Philp said: ‘When it comes to these crime measures, yes.’
A Labour Party spokesman said: ‘The Tories are all bluster.
‘Labour has made it our mission to make Britain’s street safe, starting with getting 13,000 more neighbourhood police and PCSOs on the beat – funded through reforming police procurement. Labour is the true party of law and order.’
