Tributes paid to ‘beloved’ cancer survivor, 29, who died after losing control and falling from an e-scooter he was riding along a cycle lane

A young man who survived cancer has tragically died while riding an e-scooter along a cycle lane.

Scott Wilson, 29, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, was critically injured in the collision in his home city on Saturday, April 23.

Today, his family announced that he sadly succumbed to his injuries on Friday, April 26 – six days after the crash.

Paying tribute, Scott’s mum Linda Wilson said: ‘It is with great sadness my beloved son lost his life after losing control on his electric scooter.

‘He was only 29 years of age and fought leukaemia, had both hips replaced and one shoulder replacement because of all the chemotherapy.’

Scott was seen riding his e-scooter in a cycle lane next to Harehills Lane in Leeds shortly before the accident.

According to reports, he was hurled from the saddle after losing control of the machine. No other vehicle was involved.

He is one of only a handful of Britons to die so far in the electric scooter craze.

Figures show in the 12 months before June 2021 there were 882 accidents involving e-scooters, of which 172 (around 20 per cent) were single-vehicle accidents.

There were 931 casualties resulting from those accidents, of which 732 were e-scooter users.

Tragically, three people – all e-scooter riders – were killed. The DfT estimates that 253 were seriously injured, and 675 slight injuries.

West Yorkshire police said at the time: ‘At 7.45pm on Saturday, police were contacted by the ambulance service who were attending a road traffic collision in York Road, Leeds.’

‘The rider of an electric scooter had lost control and fallen from the vehicle while travelling in a cycle lane near to the junction with Harehills Lane. No other vehicle was involved.’

‘The 29-year-old man received life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.’
