Trump is reportedly 'in talks' to create his own social media platform

Trump the new social networker: Former President ‘in talks with a host of apps’ to create his own social media platform

  • Trump and his digital advisor are reportedly in talks with a number of app vendors on forming a partnership to create Trump’s own social network
  • Axios reported that new app FreeSpace is among those under consideration
  • Following the Capitol riot on January 6, Trump was banned from Twitter, Facebook and a raft of other social media sites.

Donald Trump is reportedly in talks with app vendors as he mulls partnering with an existing platform to create his own social media network.

Trump and his digital advisor Dan Scavino are considering a number of relatively unknown platforms including FreeSpace, Axios reported, citing ‘sources familiar with the private discussions’.

A source told the news website: ‘It could be any of several companies, with more meetings this week.’

Then-President Trump was banned from Twitter on January 8th – two days after the Capitol riot – in a move which cut off communications between Trump and his nearly 90million followers on the platform.

Facebook followed suit the next day, meaning Trump lost touch with 33million accounts. A raft of other social media sites subsequently banned Trump.

Some had expected Trump to resurface on Parler – a far-right microblogging site that had previously been in talks with Trump advisors – but those efforts fell through.

In recent weeks, people close to Trump have frequently suggested that the former president intends to create a new media company to broadcast his message.

On Sunday, Jason Miller, a senior adviser to Trump, told Fox News: ‘I do think that we’re going to see President Trump returning to social media in probably about two or three months here, with his own platform.’

FreeSpace could be considered an odd choice as the app has only 20,000 downloads and is branded around ‘the power of possibility.’

The app describes itself as being ‘backed by science to positively reinforce good habits and make the world a better place.’

It encourages users to share daily habits and actions that will inspire others to duplicate them through posting on an ‘Activity Wall’ and chatting in ‘rooms’.

The app is relatively new, having only launched on February 1 in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Axios reported that FreeSpace is affiliated with Skylab Apps, a platform for coaches and trainers.

Details of any deal between Trump and FreeSpace are unclear, Axios reported, and neither the app or Trump has commented on the report.

Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner reportedly dissuaded him from joining Parler or Gab – which also has a far-right user base – after his ban from mainstream social media networks.

Twitter explained its decision to permanently suspend Trump’s account in a January 8th statement.

‘After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence,’ it read.

Twitter executives said in February that the ban would stand.

‘When you’re removed from the platform, you’re removed from the platform,’ Twitter CFO Ned Segal told CNBC on February 10.

‘He was removed when he was president and there’d be no difference for anybody who’s a public official once they’ve been removed from the service.’

Since being booted from his favorite social media site to use and criticize, Trump has released statements both from his America First political action committee and from the Office of the 45th President.

Those statements, which are more long-form but reminiscent of Trump’s Twitter activity, have been describe as being more presidential in tone than his tweets.
