A disgusting man has been arrested after he allegedly poured petrol over his girlfriend and set her on fire with a cigarette — because he was upset that she broke up with him.

Kenneth Upshaw, 38, was taken to a police station in Memphis, United States on Thursday and charged with attempted second-degree murder.

His girlfriend Rebecca Briggs survived the horrific attack, but has been left with "second-degree to deep second-degree burns" to her face, neck, chest, and arms, according to police.

Fox News reported that officers attending the scene struggled to understand her when they arrived because of the damage from her burns.

The incident began when Ms Briggs told Upshaw on a driveway outside a friend's home that she no longer wanted to be in a relationship with him.

Reacting aggressively to the news, Upshaw doused her with petrol.

He then told her that if he 'could not be with her, then no one could', before setting fire to her with a lit cigarette.

Upshaw and the homeowner then put the fire out. Neither of the couple live at the property.

Ms Briggs said to police that the attack 'happened so fast' that she could not remember entirely how it happened.

Sergeant Louis C. Brownlee, Public Information Officer at the Memphis Police Department, said the force also found a black 2016 Honda Accord parked in the driveway of the house which had been burned on its rear section. Its rear bumper had been melted off, and there were ashes on the ground.

He revealed that a fire-damaged red petrol can was also found at the scene.

Earlier this year, police began a hunt for a man in India after he was accused of setting fire to his pregnant wife.

The couple, identified only as Rahul and Pragati, were reported to have been living together in Sonipat, a town north of Dehli in India.

Neighbours heard her agonising screams and bundled into the house to find her on fire. They were then able to rush her to hospital.
