Virginia Union University student dies after collapsing during football practice

A Virginia Union University student died after collapsing on the field during practice Sunday, according to NBC 12 in Richmond.

Freshman Quandarius Wilburn, 19, collapsed during the team's preseason conditioning. He was taken to the Virginia Commonwealth University medical center, where he died. Wilburn's cause of death has not been released at this time.

VUU president Dr. Hakim Lucas released a letter calling Wilburn's death "a heartbreaking loss," according to NBC 12.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our campus community. I want to personally encourage each of you to keep Mr. Wilburn’s family in your prayers, as well as the VUU athletics department."

VUU — a HBCU — also released a statement, saying its primary concern was "the well-being of the family and fellow students impacted by this tragedy." The university said it would provide support to students and staff who needed it following Wilburn's death.
